The start of The Guardians of Thrace ProjectСВ005.2.12.024

Thracian Guardians Project, CB005.2.12.024, Contract No. RD-02-29-225 / 26.08.19, funded by the Interreg IPA Bulgaria-Turkey Cross-Border Cooperation Program (2014 - 2020), co-financed by the Instrument for European Union Pre-accession Assistance II (IPA II) started with an official press conference on 21 November 2019 in Dimitrovgrad.

The event was attended by the project partners - New Road 2011 Community Center, Dobrich Village, Shehsuvarbey Primary School, Uzunkopru, Republic of Turkey and Pencho Slaveikov Primary School, Dimitrovgrad, project team, amateurs, students from the school, partner and media.

At the press conference, project manager Stefan Dimitrov said that the first most important thing for nature and the environment is knowledge. "It is important that the future guardians of the planet - the children - know what the natural resources of our common region are and how to protect them, and that is the main goal of the project that we will implement with our partners." The introductory words were addressed by the chairman of the New Road 2011 NP Stefka Ivanova and the directors of the partner schools Snezhana Angelova and Ali Chomlek.

The main objective of the project is to improve the capacity for nature conservation, the sustainable use and management of common natural resources in the cross-border area through joint initiatives and the promotion of sustainable environmental habits among young people. The project activities will involve a total of 45 students aged 10 to 15 from both countries. For 15 months, they will actively participate in environmental training activities in the region.

The main activities of the project "Guardians of Thrace" include: environmental training; field work with laboratory kits; comparing collected and tested water, air and soil samples from both regions; conducting a round table on the benefits of recycling; introduction of a separate waste collection system with the Turkish partner; Awareness of the role of Protected Areas in the conservation of endangered species; bosting of biological waste, planting of trees and flowers and taking care of them; conservation of nature and natural resources through the acquisition of basic habits for reusing products, reducing consumption and recycling; and setting up Eco clubs in schools.

The project "Guardians of Thrace" is implemented under Priority Axis 1. "Environment". Specific objective 1.2 .: Improvement of the capacity for nature conservation, sustainable use and management of common natural resources in the cross-border area through joint initiatives. The value of the contract is EUR 117 587,87. Dobrich village, Republic of Bulgaria, and project partners are: Shehsuvarbey Primary School, Uzunkopru, Republic of Turkey and Pencho Slaveikov Primary School, Dimitrovgrad, Republic of Bulgaria.
